Villa Panza: between Antique Art and Modern Art

The perfect meeting between past and present

Built in the half XVIIIth century at the request of Marquess Paolo Antonio Menafoglio, Villa Menafoglio Litta Panza is in Biumo, Varese.
In the 1830 Villa Panza was enlarged by the neoclassical architect Luigi Canonica, at the will of Duke Pompeo Litta Visconti Arese.
The Villa hosts in his rooms a glamorous contemporary art collection, with art works that Giuseppe Panza di Biumo began to collect in the '50.
The rooms and the stables host more than hundred art works of contemporary artists, furnitures used from the XVIth century to the XIXth century and a series of african and precolombian art works.
The salone impero was the big and sumptuous dining room and it was added in the 1830, when the Villa was enlarged.
The three chrystal chandeliers and the painted ceiling are the feautures of this room.
A touch of modernity is given by the four paints of the american painter David Simpson. They are hang up on the walls.
On the villa's first floor there is the entrance to the apartment of Giuseppe Panza.
The apartment gives into the honour court, open to the garden.
This room hosts the works of the artist Phil Sims.
If the entrance and the salone impero host the artists' works, the wing of rustics has been completely transformed by the american artists Irwin, Nordman and Turrell.
The three artists, working on light, space and perception, have designed new installations by testing colours, lights and atmospheric quality of the surrounding environment.
In the nearby rooms, the colours of the neon by Flavin cancel the original shadows making the environment a tridimensional paint.
The big stable too, very bright, was built in the 1830 and today it is an exhibition space, fitted out by Gae Aulenti.
When the room doesn't host temporary exhibitions, we find here an important sculpture called "Desire".
It has been realized in the 1981 by the afro-american artist Martin Puyear.
The park is more than 33.000 square metres.
It has been redesigned in the first years of the nineteenth century on the strenght of the english gardens rules, but in the respect of the two principal perspective axis, characterized by the two big central fountains.
The park hosts particularly evocative places like the little lake, the cave and the little temple hill.
