When the present melts with the past
Il Monastero di Torba boasts of many many years of History and rises on the bank of the Olona river, between the green and rich woods in the surroundings of Varese.
The construction carry on the traces of the late roman emperor, but also the traces of Goti and Lombard, when it had military functions.
After this time, it became a monastery, which hosted the benedectines nuns.
They abandoned the monastery in 1453. After that, it became a rural farm.
Today we can still visit his painted tower, his farm and his Church.
On the first floor, which had the function of sepulchre, we can admire traces of the VIIIth century's paints.
The second floor of the tower was used as oratory and even if its paints are not perfectly kept, it is possible to see that they represent eight nuns.
The tower belongs to the Vth-VIth century and it's an important attestation of military architecture.
The benedectines nuns lived in the farm, that was also a shelter for pilgrims and travellers.
The Church has been restored, but in the respect of simplicity and style of the way it was built.
It belongs to the XIth century, except for the cripta (VIIIth century) and the apse (XIIIth century).
